AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND · PREPAREDNESS FIELD GUIDE

Prepare for
what matters.

Less fear. More clarity. A thoughtful guide to the things we actually need when everyday systems stop working.

Hypothetical planning only. Not a prediction, alert or official government publication.

01 / THE PRINCIPLE

Preparedness is not buying everything.
It is meeting your needs with what you have.

THE FOUNDATIONS

Human needs. Practical choices.

Safe alternatives, existing supplies and shared resources often meet the same need.

01

Water & food

Safe hydration and suitable nutrition. Choose food that needs little water and no cooking.

02

Shelter & warmth

A safe place, warm layers, dry footwear and adequate bedding for your local conditions.

03

Health & hygiene

Necessary medicines, first aid, handwashing and safe sanitation come before extra equipment.

04

Information & people

A radio, contact plan and cooperation. Include children, disabled people, neighbours and animals.

A SIMPLE START

Water, worked out.

Allow at least 3 litres per person per day for drinking and basic hygiene. Add extra for cooking, washing, pets, illness, breastfeeding and hot conditions.

3-DAY MINIMUM36 litres

9 litres per person

7-DAY TARGET84 litres

21 litres per person

Build gradually, not all at once.

First: find safe water, ready-to-eat food, necessary medicines, warm clothing, bedding, torches and a radio you already own. Next: arrange safe shelter, backup sanitation and manageable grab bags. Together: agree contacts, meeting points and assistance with whānau and neighbours.

Aim for at least three days of suitable food; build towards a week or more where feasible. Discuss medicine reserves, cooling and medical-device power with your care team. A grab bag is a portable selection—not your whole household reserve. Local Civil Defence may recommend more: three days does not guarantee help will arrive then.

UNDERSTANDING THE INDEX

Different situations.
Different supplies.

Labels describe applicability, not importance. A “Conditional” medicine can be life-critical to its user. Food options are alternatives, not a requirement to buy every type.

KNOW THE LIMITS

Safety before equipment.

Keep combustion outdoors.

Camping stoves and generators do not belong in rooms, tents, garages or vehicles. Carbon monoxide alarms do not make unsafe use safe. Building connections require qualified arrangements.

Protect your water.

Filters and tablets have different limits; do not assume they remove chemicals. Follow official treatment guidance and product directions. Never mix cleaning chemicals.

Respect damaged surroundings.

Unsafe buildings are not shelter. Stay away from live cables and untrained structural rescue. P2/N95 masks help with relevant particles, not gases or oxygen deficiency.

Make care personal.

Use individual clinical advice for medicines, refrigeration, medical-device backup power and evacuation. Follow local public-health advice for toilet waste and contaminated food.

Coastal earthquake: long or strong, get gone.

Evacuate tsunami zones immediately using local guidance. Do not wait for an alert or delay to collect your bag. For an actual emergency, call 111 when available.

General preparedness information, not situation-specific medical, engineering or emergency advice. No finite list covers every possible disaster.

KEEP IT PRACTICAL

Take the guide with you.

The CSV opens in Excel or Google Sheets. Filter Priority and Applies_to, review quantities and safety notes, then fill in Already_have, To_obtain and Personal_notes.

Evidence_basis separates official guidance from practical extensions. A linked source may support the broader need rather than every exact item. Extended accessibility, animal and community suggestions are not all official requirements.
